Hello all,
Now is a good time to start thinking about your final project. Instructions:
By Nov. 25th, please choose a paper from the International Symposium on Information Theory between the years 2015-2025 (not one of my papers, see a full list of all papers here
Links to an external site.), and write the paper's title in this Google sheet
Links to an external site.. You may consult me about choosing a paper---if you wish to do so, please email me or attend my office hour to discuss your interests and background. Students who do not choose a paper by the deadline will be assigned one.
Write a report which presents the paper in detail and criticizes it constructively. Below are some suggestions to guide a proper analysis of the paper:
What is the problem setting? What is the motivation behind this problem?
Which tools are being used? How are these tools related to the topics we have seen in class/HW?
Is the paper technically sound, easy to read, and does the problem make sense?
Are there any issues with the paper? If so, suggest ways these could be fixed.
What is the state of the art in this topic? Were there any major follow-up works? What are major open problems or new directions?
Suggest directions for further study and discuss how should those be addressed.
Please typeset your work using a program such as Word or LaTeX, and submit via Gradescope by Dec. 10th (EOD).
Reports will be judged by the depth and breadth of the analysis. Special attention will be given to clarity and organization, including proper abstract, introduction, sections, and citation of previous works.
There is no page limit, but good reports should contain 4-6 single-column pages.
Please refer to the syllabus for our policy regarding the use of GenAI.
I might contact you for clarifications about your work. In the days following the submission deadline, please be ready to meet with me to discuss your work.
If you do not wish to choose a paper from ISIT 2015-2025, and you have in mind a paper which is related to the course material, please contact me with the paper's title for approval.
Students are advised to wait for the lectures about private information retrieval, gradient coding, and coded computation, in order to be familiar with some research trends before choosing a paper.
This is a good opportunity for guided critical reading of contemporary research, use it wisely.
Good luck,
Netanel.
